Exploring the Abode of Clouds: Your 2026 Essential Safety Guide to Meghalaya

Lum Travels·20 March 2026

Planning a trip to Meghalaya? From mandatory digital registration to navigating the misty hills of Sohra, here is everything you need to know to stay safe and travel smart in 2026.

Meghalaya Travel Safety Checklist (March 2026)

Meghalaya is a land of unparalleled beauty, but its rugged terrain and unique climate require thoughtful preparation. Whether you're chasing waterfalls in Sohra or exploring living root bridges, safety should always come first.

1. Digital Entry Pass (Mandatory)

Before you arrive, ensure you have registered on the official Meghalaya Tourism App.

Under the 2026 updates to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), this digital registration is mandatory for all tourists. It enables authorities to assist you quickly in case of emergencies and enhances overall traveler safety.

2. Terrain & Weather Awareness

Known as the Abode of Clouds, Meghalaya experiences rapid weather changes.

  • The 4:30 PM Rule
The sun sets early. Plan to complete treks and return to your accommodation by late afternoon to avoid navigating in darkness or dense fog.

  • Hire Local Guides
For treks like Mawryngkhang (Bamboo Trail) or cave explorations, hiring a local guide is not just recommended—it’s essential for safety.

3. Connectivity & Cash

Do not rely entirely on digital infrastructure:

  • Offline Maps
Network coverage is unreliable in valleys like Dawki and remote Khasi Hills regions. Download maps in advance.

  • Carry Cash
While UPI adoption is increasing, many remote areas still operate on cash. Keep at least ₹3,000 for emergencies.

4. Health & Transport

  • Use Verified Transport
Always opt for registered “Yellow Plate” taxis. These drivers are experienced in navigating steep, misty terrain.

  • Health Precautions
Follow basic hygiene practices, especially in crowded areas like Shillong markets, as per 2026 advisories.

5. Respect the Sacred

Meghalaya’s culture is deeply rooted in nature.

When visiting Sacred Groves:

  • Do not remove anything—not even stones or leaves.
  • Respect local customs and traditions.

This ensures both your safety and a harmonious travel experience.

At Lum Travels, we prioritize your safety as much as your adventure.
